Is it too late?

Having encountered and overcome several obstacles in my life, I've come to the conclusion that nothing is actually out of reach as long as our minds are set on it. Don't think it's too late to accomplish your vision. Habbakkuk 2:2 says "though it tarries, wait for it. "

ON MY WEDDING DAY

What I read in a newpaper some minutes ago prompted me to write this short piece about my experience. It was a caption in allAfrica.com about nigerian PDP's scheduled rally in Ondo state: "Nigeria: Sambo, Obasanjo, Others to Storm Ondo for PDP Rally Tuesday" The day was on Saturday, the 3rd day of February 2007. We were returning from my wedding ceremony which took place at Ekpoma, Edo state at the Ambrose Alli Hall opposite the Esan West Local Govt office. The ceremony was great and had many people in attendance. After the wedding, we proceeded to Ile-Ife using the short-cut, passing through Sabongida-Ora, Ifon, Owo, Akure etc. We then got to Akure and there was this long traffic jam (hold-up). We were stagnated for more than four hours and the reason was because the then President, Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo was in town. He was in town in the company of Oyo state Governor. Everything and everybody stood still. What a suppression! What Yoruba will call "Aye familete ntuto" (i.e living at the expense of others. As you can imagine, we were there and reports were filtering to us how many people had been mutilated that day alone. They came with several hundreds of hooligans. In the name of politics, several individuals are being killed, not occassionally, but daily. You might think those killed are matyrs but I beg to disagree. They are those who think their existence depends on following the likes of Baba Sege. It is another independence anniversary. Nigeria is 52 today with little to nothing to show for it yet Nigerians are not tired of their task-masters. As I was say, it got to a stage my brother came out of the bus he was to pilot the newly-wedded out of the jam-packed traffic. As soon as he was out of the car people recognized him. Being a reknowned artist, he was quickly accorded the status of a big man and road was cleared for us to pass. Unfortunately, as we came out, we landed in the company of Governor Alao Akala with hundreds of those hooligans brandishing matchets and guns. We were alarmed and afraid to death. Guns and other weapons! No wonder many died on the said day. We quickly packed our cars and allowed them to pass. Meanwhile, their entourage were on something around 140mph with people sitting on cars and vans. Should anything happen, those guys are not going to make it home. So, today's headline tells me similar things might happen on Tuesday in Ondo State. If you are travelling through or living around the state, you should probably be concerned and plan your journey well in advance.

The State of Our Nigeria. Cont.......

Sometimes ago, I wrote about my short visit to Nigeria to bury my dear mother. What I saw made me sad. Meanwhile, what I saw and the conversations I had brought compassion into my heart much more than never before. I saw the state of our roads, the states of our electricity, the state of our hospitals and so on. They are all in the state of anomy; yet we have a government which president spend billions of Naira on food annually. My people, Nigeria is rather retrogressing. I remember that I promised to shed more lights on the situation at home during that short visit. I was amazed to see that people still survive in situations like that. I recall driving along Sabo market at Ile Ife, Agric Market at Ikorodu, Ketu and Mile 12 markets in Lagos. One thing is common to all of these markets. I saw what looked like carcass surrounded by people talking loudly with money in their hands, prepared to buy meat/fish upon which were millions of flies hovering and singing their usual unsanitary hymns. When you think of life expectancy in Nigeria. It is 52.05 years compared to 61.45 years in our neighborhood country (Ghana). Meanwhile, we are builders of our own present and architects of out future. Before I rest my fingers, I need suggestions on those things we need to do differently and how to proceed from our poor state of sanitation. Meanwhile, please check this link before you proceed to be continued.........

WHAT IS THERE TO ADMIRE?

One question lingered in my mind today as I go about my daily ups and downs; and that question was "What is there to admire" in our so called Nigeria.

Let's consider the state of our education. It is nothing to write home about. A beloved brother of mine wrote on his facebook page sometimes ago. He said "We cannot have an education system that is based on highest bidder and expect a united nation" (Nelson Olufemi Fajolu, Sept 4, 2012). He is right. Our education is saddening. A situation we have is such that university graduates cannot properly construct good grammar. I met an accountant who cannot balance simple accounts. What a shame!
Talking about the state of our politics, as I sat down to listen to the opening speeches of the Democratic National Convention, it dawn on me that we can never come near nonetheless come close to what America has achieved. I used to think that Nigerians are smart, but what is smartness if it cannot liberate you? What is the brouhaha about when we cannot stand up for our rights? Our politicians are daft individuals who want to "lead" a great nation. What an irony! A blind leading many blinds.
My people, I believe we have to wake up to our rights. Bob Marley said "Stand Up For Your Rights" Without resistance from the people, nothing will get done, No monument will get built, It will not be well with us, and the bleak future will become a reality. Let us stand up to those idiots who cannot even express themselves as we've seen in developed nations.

The State of Our Nigeria

I visited Nigeria briefly last week. It was a brief journey of 7 days. What I saw gave me a great concern as I went with the opinion that Nigeria and  Nigerians have changed. Those I have met in the diaspora have made me developed this pseudo-idea that Nigeria has changed for better and that condition of living has improved. But alas, what I saw betrayed my thinking and I felt really bad for what is going on in the country.
Meanwhile, I need to point out that I'm in no way close to the seat of power. Those who do we know. Some of the guys we've met here are one way or the other connected to where influence is. Unfortunately, the same set of individuals continue to tell us how good nigeria has become. They make us believe that things have changed and never what it used to be. They are right. Nigeria is not what it used to be only that it is in the opposite. We are retrogresing despite democracy. I actually wished we are still under millitary rule when we know who we are suffering from. Today we are suffering at the hands of our politicians yet we cannot really pinpoint them out.
In the next weeks, i will be sharing my encounters with you. Make sure you keep fit.
See ya!!!!!!!!!!!!
